Istanbul’s Main Pedestrian Artery Istiklal Caddesi

One of most famous avenues right in the heart of the Beyoğlu district in Istanbul is Istiklal Caddesi. Also known as the Grand Rue de Pera, this pedestrian street perfectly represents what 19th century travelers called Constantinople when they named it the Paris of the East.

Exceptional Architecture

Istiklal Caddesi boasts beautiful Ottoman era buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries, along with a myriad of other architectural styles including Renaissance Revival, Beaux-Arts, Art deco, Art Nouveau, and newly built modern structures. With elegant old patisseries and stunning passages, one of the most famed is the Cité de Pera building and the Çiçek Pasaji (Flower Passage) where you will find small restaurants, taverns, and other locales to delight you as you wander and discover. Beyoğlu's Balık Pazar, which is the local fish market, is another famous landmark not to be missed in the area.

Colorful Sights and Lots to Do

A combination of Asian and European, the street begins at Taksim Square and is a three-kilometer-long walk filled with cafes, bars, nightclubs, bookshops, boutiques, galleries, theatres, cinemas, and all the colorful sights one imagines in an international city like Istanbul. Shop and then sit to sip a Turkish coffee by day as you watch the people go by, and at night dine, go to a pub, and listen to some great live music as you while the hours away.

Café Urban

Day or night, Urban is a wonderful café to hang out in, right on the side street where you find the Galatasaray hammam and Galatasaray high school. If you are there in the summertime, you can sit at an outside table under a trellis of vines and ivy. Order a cold Efes Pilsen and enjoy the company of the local hipsters. In colder weather, the inside is cozy and old-fashioned, with a hint of vieux Paris. There you’ll find a mezzanine and a bar where you can write in your journals as you sip on a glass of wine.
